As a footnote, Bob’s comments actually got some long-overdue reaction from the state government, and plans were subsequently enacted that kept the mouth of the lake permanently open to the tidal influences of the sea. No more pong!

Bob as PM was leading a spontaneous singalong in the corridor outside the old Parliament’s House of Representatives chamber following the final adjournment at 1.33 a.m. on 3 June 1988.23 The party raged for some time and strong refreshments were consumed by many (but not Bob). He was in good voice and completely occupied in leading the singing. There were many renditions of ‘Solidarity Forever’, ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and ‘The Internationale’, as well as others that I forget. There was a story of one unnamed reveller who was found in the lift still fast asleep the next morning.
